"LINCC to Learning"
18th Annual Network Conference
October 23, 1998
Wilsonville Holiday Inn
PROGRAM:
-
WHAT IS THE INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY AND WHY SHOULD YOU
LEARN TO LOVE IT?
Dr. Joseph Janes, Professor, School of Information, University of Michigan,
will tell how he also became the Director of the first "Virtual Library"
in the US, the famous Internet Public Library. He will describe how this
award-winning project originated and will give us an update on the latest
and greatest developments at ipl.org. Attend
this session and find out why this is one of the most frequently bookmarked
and liked-to sites in libraryland.
-
MAXIMIZING OREGON'S
BRAINPOWER
MaryKay Dahlgreen, Youth Services Consultant, Oregon State Library, will
present a workshop reporting on the growing new scientific knowledge about
how the brain develops and children learn. How much does a child's
development depend on heredity and how much is the result of what the child
experiences? Understanding about critical windows of opportunity in
the early years of life has important implications for library service to
children, their parents and caregivers.
-
MIND-MAPPING
Jeri Oswalt, Training Manager for Clackamas County, shows you a whole new
way to organize your thoughts and ideas. This interactive workshop
will teach you to prepare for a report, a speech, a training session you
have to present, or anything in your work or personal life that needs to
be thought through, organized and presented.
-
WHAT'S COMING FOR THE LINAS PAC - A WHOLE NEW
LOOK
Libraries in Clackamas County (LINCC) are preparing for a new Public Access
Catalog with an updated "Graphical User Interface." At this workshop you
will get a preview look at the new PAC that will start appearing in our libraries
this year. The new PAC will run on personal computers and will allow
access to Web versions of our other databases. Dennis Todd, Account
Representative, Ameritech Library Services, will demonstrate the graphical
public catalog, and Craig Johnson, National Accounts Manager, Information
Access Company, will demonstrate how to use the new web-based IAC
databases.
-
PLAIN VANILLA GUIDE TO THE
WEB
How long have you been hearing that the World Wide Web is coming to your
library or to your own desk? How many previous Internet sessions are
now just a blur in your mind? After this hour with West Linn Public
Library Reference Librarian Sandy Glover, you should have a roadmap to guide
you through the first few days, and directions to avenues for expanding Internet
skills as your experience grows.
-
BEYOND CDA: WHAT'S NEW WITH THE
INTERNET
You know what you think about filtering and "indecent" materials on the Internet;
you know what your friends' and coworkers' opinions are. Find out from Attorney
Jeffrey Condit what's happened in the courts and on a federal and state level
since the Communications Decency Act (CDA) was struck down by the U.S. Supreme
Court in a 9-0 decision a year ago. Before joining Miller, Nash, Hager
& Carlsen LLP early in 1998, Condit served as City Attorney for the City
of Lake Oswego, where he frequently addressed constitutional issues.
-
STORIES CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE: REFLECTIONS ON SHAHRAZAD
AND THE IMPORTANCE OF STORY
What is the value of stories? Are they simply entertainments, escapes
from the humdrum or difficult in our lives? Through reflecting upon
Shahrazad and the stories he told, Susan Fletcher, a local author who is
a perennial favorite at the LINCC Conference, will reflect on the importance
of stories. In this age of increasing emphasis on technology, every
lover of stories needs to be ready to articulate the importance of nurturing
this passion in ourselves and others.
"Presentation speaks to the heart... inspiring...
great ideas."
-
ADVANCED DYNIX
SEARCHING
Debbie Dodd, Library Services Supervisor at Oregon City Public Library, will
reprise her popular workshop that shows Dynix users how to get the most out
of the system when searching. Find out how to locate elusive items
and become a power user with shortcuts, sorts, limits and hidden
commands.
-
WHERE'S MY MUX?
Jeff Ring, Supervisor, Library and Network Services at LINCC, will explain
in simple terminology why current technology is requiring completely new
types of telecom software and equipment. Examples: What is TCP/IP,
or an "IP address?" What is the difference between a "Router" and a
"Mux," and what is a "hub?" This will be fun and should clear up some
mysteries for non-technical folks. "Made a
hard subject understandable and fun."
-
STORYTELLING IN A
PINCH
It's a dark and stormy night, and the children's librarian calls fifteen
minutes before that evening's program is to start. "I can't get back
from my dinner break," she explains tearfully. "My car is totaled!"
You'll have the solution in the bag, thanks to this program in which
Lake Oswego Youth Services Supervisor Jackie Rose explains how to prepare
for the inevitable. This session is aimed at both children's librarians
considering doing some preemptive in-house training and other staff looking
for tips that will enable them to do a credible job of Storytelling in a
Pinch.
-
FINDING THE GOOD IN
CHANGE
Does it seem like everything about your job has either just changed or is
going to change very soon? You're not alone if you feel stressed, confused
and a bit frustrated by the amount of change in your job lately. These
feelings are compounded for many library workers when they undergo changes
that they had no part in selecting. Charla Hayden, Oregon Health Sciences
Library, will offer a two-part workshop that will help you understand your
reaction to changes and teach you how to make a change work FOR you. (This
workshop was a hit at the most recent OLA Support Staff Division
Conference.) "Excellent... entertaining and
useful."
-
FINDING THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT
CAN
A look at internet search tools provided by Oregon State Library Network
Development Consultant Rushton Brandis. Brandis will compare and contrast
a variety of search engines, demonstrating strengths and weaknesses of different
approaches, with tips on making the best use of what's available. Discover
new tools and learn how to refine your use of the ones you know.
-
23 TIPS FOR GETTING THE
JOB
Snakes, public speaking, job interviews... Three of the scariest things we
might ever have to deal with. If it has been awhile since your last
job interview, or you would like to be more successful, come and learn 23
tips for getting the job with Jeri Oswalt, Training Manager for Clackamas
County.
-
WILI - THE NEXT
GENERATION
WCCLS is installing the Gaylord Polaris system, a client-server, Windows-based
fully graphic product. If you folks in the neighboring libraries are
curious about how it will look, come to this session and Barbara Kesel,
Automation Librarian, and Rosemary Mitchell, Senior Library Assistant, from
Washington County Cooperative Library Services will demonstrate the Public
Access Catalog portion of the new WILI.
-
101 USES FOR WORLDCAT
Join Alane Wilson, OCLC Account Manager and Sam Sayre, Network Coordinator,
OCLC Pacific as they demonstrate various creative ways (besides cataloging)
that libraries make use of the largest bibliographic database in the world,
OCLC WorldCat! There is plenty of "gold" to be found in this mighty
resource, and it can help make your job easier, whether it is ILL verification,
collection development, developing bibliographies or in-depth subject searching.
Many libraries are purchasing direct access to WorldCat for all of
their staff, and here's a chance to find out how it could help you, too.
"Entertaining AND informative."
-
LUNCHEON SPEAKER: DR. JOSEPH JANES -- TOPIC: THE

Or at least it better be! Dr. Janes will talk about this new
environment, and where librarianship should go to be a vital and crucial
part of it.
"Thought provoking... entertaining... contagious
enthusiasm!"
