• EFFECTIVE CITIZEN SERVICE
  Dr. Henry "Budd" Kass, back by popular demand after last year's Ethics workshop, has designed this workshop to improve our level of service delivery.  He will show us how to relate the concept of customer service to the broader idea of citizen service and to convey the service factors of reliability, responsiveness, competence, and care to our public.  Dr. Kass is a Professor of Public Administration at Portland State University and a well-known consultant to government agencies.
• TECHNICAL SERVICES IN A PUBLIC SERVICE WORLD
  Even below stairs we too serve the public.  Kari Martinez, Technical Services Manager at Salem Public Library, will present a program dealing with many aspects of technical services from cataloging to processing and show you how this is a public service.
• PARK YOUR AUTODIDACT HERE: PROVIDING EXCELLENT SERVICE TO HOMESCHOOLERS
  A half million children are being homeschooled in 1995 according to one estimate, and yet library staff often don't know who the homeschoolers in our communities are.  Find out what this rapidly growing population needs from public libraries.  A panel of 3 homeschooling experts, including Ann Lahrson, author of Homeschooling in Oregon; Jean Biggerstaff of the Oregon Home Education Network; and Paul King of the North East Portland Homeschooling Group (affiliated with the Oregon Christian Education Association Network) will discuss how libraries can meet their needs.    "Provided a wealth of information... looking forward to better serving homeschoolers now."
• YOUR PERSONAL FINANCIAL THERAPY
  Are you master of your money, or does your money master you?  Are big expenses (car, house, college) giving you headaches?  Are money problems interfering with your domestic tranquility?  Do you know how you'll fare in retirement?  You can gain control of your financial life!  Beverly Fogel is a Certified Financial Planner who works with folks from all walks of life to help them gain control of their money - and of their financial life.
• COMMUNITY ADVOCACY: A WORKSHOP FOR LIBRARY TRUSTEES
  Michael Gaston, Director of the Siuslaw Public Library District and Ray Cooper, a member of the Siuslaw Library Board will share their secrets for successful community advocacy.  They'll advise Library Trustees and library supporters how to make the kind of grass-roots connections to the community that can really pay off in long-term support for libraries.
• FRIENDS FOREVER
  Anne Carter, President of the Friends and Trustees section of OLA will lead a round-table discussion of the activities, projects and programs currently being sponsored or managed by Friends groups throughout Oregon.  Library Friends are encouraged to attend and share their activities, while hearing about "what's happening" in Friends groups from other areas.
• IAC SEARCHING
  One of the most popular services reference can provide is indexed periodicals.  In this one hour workshop, Linda Lybecker, Senior Librarian and Second Level Reference Manager at Washington County Cooperative Library Services, will use the IAC product to review database context, searching with PowerTrac, what is in "Help," and how to get a current list of indexed periodicals.
• SCHOOL VISITS WHICH WIN FRIENDS AND MAKE EAGER READERS
  Do you want more interaction with the schools in your area but you're not sure how to start the process?  Here are presentation tips and tricks as well as great booktalking ideas sure to boost your circulation.  Booktalk veteran Jackie Rose is the Youth Services Supervisor at the Lake Oswego Public Library.  She visited 110 classrooms during the last school year.    "Well-done!"
• GETTING ALONG FOR FUN & PROFIT
  Do some of your co-workers get on your nerves at times?  Do you get on their nerves at times?  It's natural.  But, the better we get along, the more productive, cooperative, relaxing, and enjoyable the workplace becomes.  In this fast-paced and engaging workshop, you will learn ideas, tips, and suggestions for enhancing the "getting along" spirit of your workplace.  Rich Galvez, who has been the Training Manager at Clackamas County for the last six years, will facilitate the workshop.             "Excellent speaker... holds attention with examples, video clips, etc."
• BASIC INTERNET
  Kathryn Lawder is a research associate at OHSU as well as teaching in the continuing education program at Marylhurst College.  This program is a close-up look at the Internet for surfing novices.  She will be explaining how and where to search the Internet in relation to various library-related resources.

• PUBLICITY AND PROMOTION IN YOUR PUBLIC LIBRARY
  Getting the word out about your library can seem a daunting task if your experience or time is limited.  This workshop will focus on ways to reach your intended audience and increase patron participation.  We will look at demographics, community partnerships, library programs, mailing lists and relationships with the various kinds of media.  B.J. Doty is a public information specialist with Washington County Cooperative Library Services, and a freelance library consultant.
• SURF'S UP! CATCHING THE URLy WAVE ON THE WEB
  Numb from entering those strings of characters? Apply serendiPitygEnerously. Yes, Netscape helps you catch those waves.  Rushton Brandis, Network Development Consultant for the Oregon State Library, will show you where to surf in your library without getting the pages wet, teach you how to use Netscape to locate valuable resources on the WWW.
• ACTIVE MUSIC CHILDREN LOVE
   Enjoy this one hour workshop on participatory music and movement that Children's Librarians can use during their storytimes for young children.  Educator and recording artist Jory Aronson will provide participants with a wealth of simple-to-use songs, ideas, and actions (as well as an I-can-do-it attitude!). Participants need to bring a battery-powered cassette player and blank tapes to record on.  Pre-recorded cassette albums will be available for purchase.
• PUT YOURSELF IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT: INTERVIEW SKILLS FOR THE NINETIES
  How long has it been since you had an interview?  Are you a wreck before and during it?  Do you know the common mistakes that generate those "Sorry, but..." rejection letters?  Spend an hour with Pete Paskill of CareerMakers, Inc. and Nancy McDonald, Personnel Director for the City of Tualatin, updating your interviewing skills so that you can sell yourself successfully.
• CONTINUING EDUCATION IN TECHNOLOGY
  David Burt, Information Technology Librarian at the Lake Oswego Public Library, will discuss the range of options available in the Portland area for computer-related education, from one-day seminars for the beginner to complete vocational programs.  A limited number of brochures and catalogs will be supplied.
• QUICK QUERIES: ADVANCED DYNIX SEARCHING
  Learn the tricks and tips for getting the most from the Dynix Search feature with the least amount of time and effort.  A step-by-step approach is taught using handouts with sample screens and real-world examples.  Includes shortcut searching, the sort and limit features, constructing search arguments, combining searches, and printing bibliographies.  Debbie Dodd, Library Services Supervisor for Oregon City Public Library, will be the presenter.   "Very helpful!"
• YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMS ON A SHOESTRING
  Salem Public Library's young adult librarian Susan Dunn will present programs and ideas for youth, which can be accomplished on a limited budget.    "Great! ...practical ideas that I will use."

  STEWARDSHIP: THE ETHICAL OBLIGATION
  In these times of citizen mistrust of public employees, understanding our role as stewards can give us a renewed sense of purpose as we go about our jobs in our community libraries.  Dr. Kass will explain how stewardship, our role as a trusted agent, is the ethical basis of good service.  This inspiring keynote address will be a direct lead-in to Dr. Kass' two-hour workshop on Effective Citizen Service which will follow.
